Development of biodiversity information

Information technology and networks have been made remarkable progress in biodiversity informatics. Various biodiversity information is now available at global level through the World Wide Web. However, such information is still limited and scattered in Asia. The communication infrastructure has not yet been developed adequately in this region. Hence, it is difficult for policy/decision makers to access necessary information. Therefore, ESABII gathers, compiles and processes data and information from available data sources, then develops necessary biodiversity information for conservation policies, and provides for policy/decision makers.
There are various databases in the world, but user friendly regional biodiversity information is needed. Policy making oriented biodiversity information is also required in Asia. ESABII supports development of such regional biodiversity information and information infrastructure.

  • ESABII develops website to provide regional biodiversity information in collaboration with existing information networks and ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB).
  • Expert group of ESABII provides technical support for the information development and utilization.
  • The Website covers information on scientific names, vernacular names, geographic distribution, abundance, endangered and conservation status with visual images, maps and graphs.

Taxonomic Capacity Building

Enhancement of taxonomic human resource and capacity is necessary for decision-making in conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. ESABII supports the following activities for taxonomic capacity building in East and Southeast Asia.

  • Training courses for taxonomic capacity building with assistance of expert group
  • Development and dissemination of products for taxonomic capacity building such as guides for species identification
  • Facilitating development of human, institution and information networks for taxonomic capacity building
