Ecology

Ecology (Behaviour)

This species is strongly migratory and travels largely overland on a broad front between its breeding and wintering grounds1. It breeds from early-June to July in solitary pairs, usually well-dispersed but sometimes very close together within wetlands1. The departure from the breeding grounds starts in July and peaks between August and September, with the return northward migration peaking between April and May1. The species is only mildly gregarious outside of the breeding season and usually forages singly or in small groups1 of 3-7 individuals although it rarely also occurs in flocks of between 15 and 50 individuals2.

Birdlife International

Habitat

<Breeding> The species breeds near pools2 on open, grassy bogs or swamps1, 2, 3 or on mountain tundra3 in boreal forest (taiga)1, 2, showing a preference for areas with mosses, sedges and dwarf willows Salix spp. for nesting2.
<Non-breeding> Outside of the breeding season the species occupies shallow inland wetlands1, 2, 4 and although it shows no preference over fresh, brackish or saline waters it does require habitats with soft, muddy shorelines and short grass2, 4, sedges, floating aquatic vegetation, reeds and rushes4. Suitable habitats include the edges of permanent and temporary lakes2, 4, ponds, reservoirs4, lagoons, swamps2, 4 and streams, river flood-plains4, marshes2, rice-fields1, sewage ponds, saltpans1, 4 and saltmarshes1. The species also less frequently occurs around tidal estuaries4 on intertidal mudflats1, 2.

Birdlife International

Diet

Its diet includes insects (e.g. carabid beetles), small gastropod molluscs, crustaceans1 amphibians2 and seeds1.

Birdlife International

Breeding Site

The nest is a shallow depression1 on a hummock of sedge3 well-hidden1 in areas with mosses, sedges and dwarf willows Salix spp. near pools2 on open, grassy bogs or swamps1, 2, 3 or on mountain tundra3 in boreal forest (taiga)1, 2. The species shows a high degree of nest site fidelity1.

Justification

This species has a very large range, and hence does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the range size criterion (Extent of Occurrence <20,000 km2 combined with a declining or fluctuating range size, habitat extent/quality, or population size and a small number of locations or severe fragmentation). The population trend is not known, but the population is not believed to be decreasing sufficiently rapidly to approach the thresholds under the population trend criterion (>30% decline over ten years or three generations). The population size may be moderately small to large, but it is not believed to approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population size criterion (<10,000 mature individuals with a continuing decline estimated to be >10% in ten years or three generations, or with a specified population structure). For these reasons the species is evaluated as Least Concern.
<Trend justification> The population trend is difficult to determine because of uncertainty over the extent of threats to the species.

Asian Waterbird Census

Descriptions

The Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) was initiated in 1987 and runs in parallel with other waterbird censuses carried out in Africa, Europe, Central and West Asia and Latin America under the umbrella of the International Waterbird Census (IWC), which is organised by Wetlands International.

The AWC takes place annually, during the second and third weeks of January, and is carried out by volunteers interested in collecting information on waterbirds and wetlands as a basis for contributing to their conservation.
