This species is fully migratory and travels over land on a broad front between its breeding and wintering grounds1. It breeds from late-May to August2 after which it migrates in small flocks of 5-10 individuals1. The species also overwinters in small groups3.
<Breeding> It breeds in Arctic and boreal wetlands up to 2,300 m above sea-level on damp meadows along river valleys1, 3, in grassy and mossy swamps4, swampy taiga forest3, 4, sphagnum bogs3 and shrub tundra with patches of dwarf birch Betula nana1.
<Non-breeding> In its wintering range the species inhabits a wider variety of wetland habitats including flooded paddy-fields, wet grasslands, seepage swamps and marshland1, often foraging on the muddy shorelines of swamps and along streams1, 3.
ts diet consists of molluscs, adult and larval insects, earthworms and occasionally crustaceans, seeds and other plant matter1.
The nest is a shallow depression usually well-concealed in dense cover1.

LC
This species has an extremely large range, and hence does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the range size criterion (Extent of Occurrence <20,000 km2 combined with a declining or fluctuating range size, habitat extent/quality, or population size and a small number of locations or severe fragmentation). The population trend is not known, but the population is not believed to be decreasing sufficiently rapidly to approach the thresholds under the population trend criterion (>30% decline over ten years or three generations). The population size is very large, and hence does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population size criterion (<10,000 mature individuals with a continuing decline estimated to be >10% in ten years or three generations, or with a specified population structure). For these reasons the species is evaluated as Least Concern.
<Trend justification> The population trend is difficult to determine because of uncertainty over the impacts of habitat modification on population sizes.

The Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) was initiated in 1987 and runs in parallel with other waterbird censuses carried out in Africa, Europe, Central and West Asia and Latin America under the umbrella of the International Waterbird Census (IWC), which is organised by Wetlands International.
The AWC takes place annually, during the second and third weeks of January, and is carried out by volunteers interested in collecting information on waterbirds and wetlands as a basis for contributing to their conservation.
